His tightly syncopated, modernistic swing was unique. No one else quite sounded like his Quintette... At least, that was what I thought before I started collecting 78s! Scott's cartoony swing infected several other bands of the time. These two British artists reflect the influence of different aspects of Raymond Scott's sound. Joe Daniels produced a couple of dozen hard swinging small band records for Decca and Parlophone. The debt to Scott's Quintette is clear... the "Hot Shots in Drumnastics" feature precise cartoony drumming and syncopated muted trumpet just like Scott's band. Daniels' music was popular both in the States and the UK in the thirties, and during the war, he toured extensively. When the big band era ended in the late fifties, he operated a "Wimpy Bar" in Picadilly Circus selling hamburgers. He passed away in 1993 in his late eighties. Ambrose rode the crest of success both before and after WWII, leading a versatile big band through many styles: rhumbas, sentimental ballads and straight ahead big band swing. This CD collects several of the adventurous tunes composed by Ambrose's staff arranger in the late thirties, Sid Phillips. Phillips, who fronted his own band in the fifties, created mini-masterpieces of swinging cartoon music, liberally elaborating on ideas derived from Scott's Quintette. For Ambrose, he created vivid musical depictions of galloping midnight rides, attacking cannibals, Martian landscapes and menacing spiders. Customer Reviews "I thought I should let you know that the CDs arrived. You have done a good job with the transfers, which show plenty of life and presence. So many reissues have sound which is grossly attentuated or muffled-- or both! The major companies, who by rights should have access to the greatest resources, are usually among the worst. Their engineers have either no taste, or no understanding and respect for the music. I was very pleased with the British Swing CD, because I had only heard one of the tracks before. A number of the clarinet solos on the Ambrose cuts are by the vastly unappreciated musician, Danny Polo. All the best in your endeavours, you are obviously a man of taste and talent.
