The supply of great melodies and spirited performances in 1920s dance band records seems to be virtually endless. It's a mystery to me why this music hasn't had wider distribution in recent years. My second CD collection contains more gems from the Cameo, Victor, Vocalion, Brunswick and Columbia labels, and has the bright and present sound you've come to expect from VIP Records. I think when you listen to it, you'll have a hard time resisting the urge to tango, waltz and foxtrot the way they used to back in Grandpa's day! Several great bands are represented here... Paul Whiteman's Orchestra of course, but also the jumping band of the saxophonist from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Bennie Krueger; Ben Selvin's versatile outfit; the Benson Orchestra of Chicago; and my all time favorites, the twin pianos of Victor Arden and Phil Ohman. For fans of cartoons, there are a lot of cuts to enjoy, including Jack Hylton's rendition of "The King's Horses", best known from a Betty Boop cartoon called Chess Nuts. Selvin's "Oh, Doris" was never in a Fleischer cartoon, but the ad-libbed chatter among the band members would be right at home in a Popeye or Betty Boop cartoon. A particular standout is "Red Hot" by the ground breaking jug band, The Mound City Blue Blowers. Listen to this song, and you will be reminded of just about every jazzy musical number in old hillbilly cartoons. There's plenty to like here. You won't be disappointed! Just when you're convinced you've heard it all, along come new compilations of forgotten treasures to excite and delight. Within these early marches and jazz numbers can be found the roots of big band swing, while songs filled with light hearted imagery like The Sleepy Town Express point the way toward animated musical fantasies that would be created a decade later by Max Fleischer and Walt Disney. Painstakingly restored and transferred to CD by Stephen Worth, these songs sound as fresh as the day they were recorded.
